Surgery 

Cancer surgery is an operation to repair or remove part of your body to diagnose or treat cancer. Your doctor can use cancer surgery to: 

• Diagnose the cancer 
• Treat the cancer 
• Relieve symptoms caused by the cancer 

In some cases, cancer surgery may be your only treatment. In other cases, you may need other treatments, such as radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy or immunotherapy. 

Medical Oncology/Chemotherapy 

Chemotherapy uses drugs to treat a disease. There are several ways to receive anticancer drugs. These include: 

• By mouth with pills, tablets, capsules and syrups 
• By injections or infusions into your bloodstream 
• By injections into your muscles 

Whatever the form of anticancer medication, chemotherapy is usually no more painful to take than any other drug given in the same manner. 

An oncology certified nurse gives all chemotherapy medications. A four-person check system (your physician, a pharmacist and two oncology nurses) carefully checks and calculates each dose.

Molecular-Targeted Cancer Treatment 

Molecular-targeted cancer therapies are drugs or other substances that block the spread of cancer. They block it by interfering with specific molecules involved in tumor growth. This treatment includes drugs that:

• Interfere with the signals needed for cell growth or the blood vessels that feed a tumor 
• Promote the death of specific cancer cells 
• Stimulate the immune system to destroy specific cancer cells
