Bone Density Testing
Monitoring your bone health has never been easier
Bone Density Testing at Winchester Hospital
Some conditions cause bones to weaken over time. However, we can’t always tell when bones become weak.
That’s why the orthopedic and radiology specialists at Winchester Hospital provide bone density tests (also called bone densitometry). Bone density tests are specialized imaging scans that measure the strength of your bones. These tests can detect bone conditions early. This tool helps take preventive measures or get treatment if needed.
Bone Density Testing and Osteoporosis
Bone density tests are commonly used to diagnose osteoporosis. Osteoporosis weakens bones and can cause fractures that limit your ability to move and be independent. Bone density testing can detect osteoporosis before you have symptoms or a fracture. This test also can help monitor osteoporosis treatment.
If you think you may be at risk for osteoporosis, ask your doctor if a bone density test is right for you.
What to Expect During a Bone Density Test
A bone density test uses small amounts of radiation (less than the amount in a chest X-ray) to determine the thickness of certain bones. The test lasts less than 20 minutes. The test is not recommended for women who are pregnant or who may be pregnant.
Don’t take calcium supplements the day of the test. Avoid wearing metal on your torso (such as snaps, underwire and zippers). During the test, you’re asked to lie flat on a scanner table.
Scheduling a Bone Density Test
Bone density tests require a written order from your doctor. This order can be faxed or brought with you. To schedule a bone density test, call our scheduling office at 781-756-2211 and press 2.
You may need preauthorization from your insurance provider for insurance to pay for your test. Although Winchester Hospital accepts most major commercial insurance plans (including Medicare, Medicaid and Worker’s Compensation), all insurance companies cover tests differently. If you don’t have health insurance, we accept MasterCard or Visa, personal checks, or cash. We also can set up payment plans.
About Your Exam Results
Your results are reviewed by a radiologist using our state-of-the-art picture archiving and communication system (PACS). The results are sent to your doctor. You and your doctor can discuss the results and decide the best course of treatment.
