da Vinci® Robotic Surgery System

Introduction

Winchester Hospital is committed to utilizing state-of-the-art technology in order to provide the highest quality care to our patients. The da Vinci® Robotic Surgery System is the most recent advancement for performing minimally invasive surgical procedures, offering Winchester Hospital patients a viable option to conventional surgery. Winchester Hospital currently offers a robotic surgery option to patients considering procedures relating to gynecology and urology.

How It Works

Specially trained surgeons currently perform gynecologic and urologic procedures with robotic technology at Winchester Hospital. The da Vinci® Surgery System assists surgeons in performing complex surgery with more precision and control than ever before.

To perform a procedure, surgeons sit at a console at the robot, next to the patient, and are able to view the operative site in a magnified, three-dimensional manner. With the use of the robot, the surgeon continues to make all the decisions but the technology allows for intricate hand, finger and wrist movements that would otherwise be impossible. As a result, surgeons can now perform complex surgery using incisions of 1-2 centimeters.

Patient Benefits

Patients who choose to have a minimally invasive procedure using robotic technology experience many benefits to conventional surgery. These benefits include:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Less pain
  • Less bleeding
  • Fewer complications
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Minimal scarring
  • Quicker return to normal activities

Tens of thousands of patients worldwide have had successful robotic-assisted surgery, allowing them to return to their normal routine much sooner than with traditional procedures.
