Nov. 17 Lecture by Capt. Richard Phillips, Survivor of Somali Pirate Attack, to Benefit Winchester Hospital and Winchester High School Class of 2010
Winchester, Mass. – Capt. Richard Phillips, the American sea captain who offered himself as a hostage to save his crew from Somali pirates last spring, will be the guest speaker at a fundraiser on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 7-9 p.m., at McCall Middle School in Winchester. Proceeds will benefit the Winchester Hospital Center for Cancer Care and the Winchester High School Class of 2010.
On April 8, 2009, Phillips and 19 crew members of the Maersk Alabama – which was carrying food aid bound for Rwanda, Somalia and Uganda – were attacked off the eastern coast of Somalia. He was tied up and held at gunpoint on an enclosed lifeboat for a $2 million ransom by four pirates, three of whom were killed by U.S. Navy SEAL snipers following a five-day standoff.
Phillips, who lives in Underhill, Vt., graduated from Winchester High School in 1973. His father, James Austin Phillips, was a longtime teacher, head basketball coach and assistant football coach at Winchester High School. Phillips said he is pleased to be supporting his alma mater as well as the fight against cancer, to which both his father and father-in-law, Arthur Anthony Coggio, succumbed.
That sentiment is shared by Cindy DeRosa, parent advisor to the Winchester High School Class of 2010 and longtime Winchester Hospital volunteer. In honor of two classmates with cancer, the Winchester High School Class of 2010 previously donated $500 raised through face painting and a used book sale at last year’s Winchester Town Day to benefit a comprehensive Winchester Hospital Center for Cancer Care, where patients will receive the treatment and support they require in one place in their local community.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming Capt. Phillips home to Winchester and thanking him for donating his time to these great causes,” said DeRosa, who is also co-chair of the Winchester Hospital Gala, which will be held on Nov. 21 in the State Room at 60 State St. in Boston to benefit the Winchester Hospital Center for Cancer Care.
Tickets to Capt. Phillip’s lecture, which cost $20, are available at Book Ends in Winchester and Winchester Hospital’s Volunteer Office. For more information, call the Volunteer Office at (781) 756-2625.
